| Don Imus: Open mouth; insert foot. Again Mon, 30 Jun 2008 01:39:00 EST WHAT IS IT that big time broadcaster Don Imus apparently doesn't understand about racial insensitivity? During an on-air conversation about the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, Imus asked, "What color is he?" Told Jones is "African-American," Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know." Imus' inference that Jones is a troublemaker because he's African-American not only was stupid but racially offensive, observed Tim Dahlberg, AP sports columnist. Imus attempted to turn it around the next day by claiming his comment meant the opposite, but the Black Coaches and Administrators Association, for one, wasn't buying it. Neither was Jones, who told the Dallas Morning News he was upset over the remarks and would pray for Imus. You'd think Imus would have learned a lesson when he was fired from his previous gig after referring to members of the Rutgers women's basketball team in racially derogatory terms. You might think that, but you'd be wrong. Yes, Imus has freedom of speech, but with freedom comes responsibility. |
