| Haiti's tourism dreams dashed by riots Mon, 09 Jun 2008 01:12:00 EST VIOLENT STREET PROTESTS over soaring food costs have killed at least seven natives and injured hundreds in the former tourist mecca of Haiti. Warnings to travelers about visiting Haiti's historic Citadelle Laferriere, considered one of the most impressive mountaintop fortresses in the world, are growing increasingly more dire. More than 140 American citizens have been kidnapped since 2005, the U.S. embassy says. The country has averaged one abduction a day so far this year, including a Canadian intern seized outside her home this month. Against this increasingly violent backdrop, Haitian tourism officials' dreams of turning the impoverished country into the Caribbean's next vacation hotspot have become a nightmare. |
